Irrational fear is a feeling that consumes a person when they see or experience an event that stirs up anxiety or similar feelings. If you are someone who is extremely scared of spiders, or thunder, then you experience this irrational fear. This is a negative term that is associated with the fear which has a connection to past events, however, usually the fear can develop in a way that you will do anything to avoid it. 

Someone with a phobia can experience extreme anxiety that interferes with daily activities. This is to such an extent that normal life is disrupted and you cannot live freely- at least the same way before you developed this fear. 

What Triggers Irrational Fear? 

The intense fear of an object, place, thing or animal can be due to several reasons, usually the triggers are recognized as follows: 

  • The trigger may be the object itself that causes that extreme fear or discomfort 
  • It may be an image of the object or creature that stirs that discomfort. 
  • Even at the mention of the thing, a person with a phobia can become anxious or have panic attacks. 
  • For example, a person with the fear of clowns may become petrified at the image, mention or just the thought of the character. 

What causes phobia or irrational fears? 

The causes of fear are usually related to an event that left the person experiencing the fear traumatized. This can be due to the extreme discomfort that you went through either mentally, emotionally or physically which led to the development of this fear. 

Following is a list of common causes associated with irrational fears

  • Trauma due to past incidents: this is the most common cause of the condition and has a deep-seated place in the person’s life. The individual experiencing an ‘irrational’ fear of something has been through an event in their life that has left them with the uncomfortable feeling which is serious enough to trigger panic or anxiety attacks.  
  • If you were surrounded by an abusive/unhealthy environment while growing up. The factors in your childhood environment have led to your current developed fears. This can look like elderly people in the house who were constantly worried or anxious. This can reflect as your inability to cope with the similar factors that caused those feelings in them. 
  • Long-term stress can lead to the feelings of panic or anxiety as your ability to cope with stressful situations or events is hampered. This can look like you are fearful of situations in an elevated manner such that you want to avoid the situation entirely. For example, someone who experienced a traumatic event in a social setting may want to avoid such gatherings,especially with the same set of people to avoid being embarrassed again. This can lead to a serious condition that may even take the form of extreme social anxiety. 
  • It can develop as a response to fear or panic. The body may automatically go into panic mode that can trigger a panic attack when you are faced with a stressful situation. Your trigger can cause this as a response as your body no longer knows how to cope with the fear or stress anymore. 
  • Even though this cause is not the most common, it is a significant reason why some people develop phobias. This is a genetic factor that implies that you develop a certain phobia due to your chances of being scared by that particular thing or situation being higher. Even though there is a scarcity of research to back this up, there have been reports where people were more likely to develop a fear due to the observation of the ame phobia in someone close to them such as siblings or parents.

How Do I Help With Irrational Fears? 

If you are someone who has a friend or a family member with an irrational fear or phobia and you want to be supportive you may encourage them to try the following options: 

 

  • Consulting a professional about the phobia. Usually in these cases of phobias or extreme fear, the person can be helped by a professional in a better way as they guide them through the entire coping process. The person is able to follow a ‘plan’ where they can get rid of the fear and feel better when faced with the challenging situation (“trigger.”) 
  • Trying to talk to them about the fear. This will help you find the trigger that is causing the irrational fear. This way you are mindful about the possible things that can trigger their fear. This helps you keep them away from stressful situations while they find a way to cope with the fear. 

How To Tackle Irrational Fear? 

The following steps can be followed by you if you experience this form of fear that triggers an anxiety attack in you or causes you extreme panic. These are as follows: 

  • Practice breathing. This has been proven as an effective step to control panic and anxiety. Worth a try! 
  • Look at the evidence. This is also a form of mindfulness where you cope with teh fear through connecting the ‘evidence’ and reaffirming that there is nothing to fear. When you know you are in control of the situation, you can bounce back faster- preventing any panic or anxiety attacks.
